History

In the summer of 1960, Pastor William T. Carlson and Minister of Music Allen Meeks came as a team from Mississippi to lead a new mission sponsored by First Baptist Church, Anchorage.  A Quonset hut served as the initial meeting place on the church’s property at DeArmoun Road and Old Seward Highway. Later that year, the Quonset hut was removed and a small building was moved to the property.

The mission constituted as Sunset Hills Baptist Church on September 10, 1961.  There were 24 charter members.  Sunset Hills also joined the Chugach Baptist Association and the Alaska Baptist Convention and sent messengers for the first time that same year.

The property at our current location, 12130 Old Seward Highway, was purchased and building began in September 1966.  The first service in the new building was Easter Sunday, March 26, 1967 and the building was dedicated on November 26, 1967.  The Education Wing was added in 1982.
